One of the most loaded structural units in the VAZ 2107 vehicle is the rear axle, or rather its gearbox. However, it can serve for quite a long time if it is assembled and installed correctly. Equally important is timely maintenance and proper operation of the vehicle.

In accordance with the instructions, the oil composition in the rear axle of the VAZ 2107 model should be replaced immediately after break-in, even later - after the mileage is at least 2,000 km, and subsequently at intervals of 60,000 kilometers.

It is important to know that the VAZ 2107 gearbox contains a special type of hypoid transmission coupled with offset axes. This type provides a reduction in noise levels during the grinding of elements, however, the sliding that appears along the teeth can often lead to the risk of jamming, but this, however, can be eliminated by a special transmission oil fluid.

The rear axle gearbox of the VAZ-2107 is a complex device with the help of which crankshaft revolutions are converted into rotation of the rear wheels. The drive axle is fixed to the car body using rods. For reliable operation of the gearbox, a special lubricant is provided, which protects mechanical parts from premature wear. This device operates under large temperature differences and constant high load. Therefore, to protect surfaces, a special oil with enhanced protective properties is required.


How to change the oil on the rear axle of a VAZ 2107

The rear axle often operates at high temperatures (about 140 degrees). Under the influence of air, the composition of the lubricating fluid oxidizes, clots and sediment form, and viscosity decreases. As a result, the protective lubricant becomes useless. And the parts of the drive axle are destroyed. Changing the oil in the rear axle of a VAZ-2107 can significantly extend the life of the vehicle.

  • From the top edge of the filling hole, the oil level should be at a depth of 15 millimeters.
  • If you need to change the oil in the steering gear of a VAZ 2107, then use a spanner wrench to “13” to remove the four bolts that secure the lower cover of the gearbox.
  • Just slide the lid and pour the oil into the container.
  • The cover is put in place, secured with bolts and new oil is poured.
  • The plug is screwed into the filler hole.

Checking the oil level

Checking the oil level in the rear axle is quite simple. To do this, you will need a container with a volume of about one and a half liters, a 17mm wrench and a screwdriver. The next steps are:

  • the car is placed on a viewing hole, overpass or lift;
  • the filler plug is cleaned of dirt;
  • use a 17 key to unscrew the filler plug;
  • The oil level is controlled with a screwdriver: the liquid should reach the edge of the hole.

If there is insufficient protective liquid, it is necessary to add it using a syringe or other device.

Oil change instructions

You can replace the gearbox lubricant in an inspection pit, overpass or lift. Before driving the car into the pit, you should drive a little and warm up the axle fluid. You should also prepare in advance a tool (a set of keys and screwdrivers), containers for working, protective gloves, rags, a special syringe or a device with a hose for pouring.

Changing the oil in the rear axle gearbox of the VAZ-2107 is performed in the following order:

  1. Clean the drain and filler plugs from any dirt.
  2. Using a 12mm wrench, unscrew the drain plug.
  3. Drain the old gear oil into the prepared container. Remember that the liquid will be hot after warming up.
  4. Tighten the drain plug.
  5. Unscrew the filler plug.
  6. Pour in enough oil to reach the bottom edge of the hole.
  7. Tighten the filler plug. Make sure there are no leaks.

If inspection of the used fluid shows severe contamination, then you need to rinse the gearbox before filling in a new one. To do this, mix transmission or motor oil with diesel fuel in a ratio of three to one. The resulting mixture is poured into the reducer. One wheel is lifted with a jack. The engine starts and first gear is engaged. This process takes several minutes. After this, the cleaning fluid can be drained and new drive axle grease can be added.

Which lubricant to choose

Many drivers have a reasonable question: what oil to fill? Mechanics recommend pouring oil into the rear axle gearbox of a VAZ-2107 with a viscosity of 75W90, 80W90 or another suitable one with API classification GL-4/GL-5. Synthetics and semi-synthetics thicken less on cold days. However, their consistency has characteristic differences. Synthetics have high fluidity, which is why they are used in new manual transmissions. It begins to leak even with the smallest defect in the sealing gasket.

Semi-synthetic oil is thicker. Therefore, it is used in the manual transmission of a car that has covered more than 100,000 kilometers. If, after filling, the semi-synthetic material begins to ooze, then it is time to replace the failed parts.

Of course, each driver decides for himself which oil to use. But in any case, it is necessary to take into account all the nuances described above. Lubricant characteristics must comply with the manufacturer's recommendations. Replacement is carried out in accordance with the specified regulations. As a result, the gearbox will operate without repair for a long time.

Greetings) Of course, the oil in the axles changes depending on the mileage, but the car was recently purchased, what and when the previous owners filled in the axles is unclear, so I decided to change everything. To do this, I purchased 3 liters of Liqui Moly gear oil with a viscosity of 75W90 and 6 cans of Step-Up universal cleaner.

1) Clean the gearbox cover with a wire brush to remove any adhering dirt.

2) Unscrew the filler plug (3/8″ square). You should always start with the filler plug, because if it doesn’t come off, it’s better not to start.

3) Look how black the oil is.

4) Unscrew the cover bolts (head 17/32 - approximately 13.5 mm).

5) Remove the lid and drain the old oil. Be careful, don't get wet.

6) Thoroughly spray all the insides of the bridge with cleaner (you can use any automotive aerosol).

7) Use a wire brush to remove any remaining old sealant.

8) Once again we spill everything with cleaner.

9) Use a rag to collect the remaining cleaner from the differential housing.

10) Thoroughly blow out all the insides with compressed air (the task is to completely dry the remaining cleaner).

11) Moving on to the lid, it also needs to be thoroughly cleaned of sealant and dirt.

12) Wash and dry the lid.

Do not skimp on sealant; purchase only high-quality high-temperature automotive sealant.

13) Apply sealant.

The sealant must be applied in an even roller with a diameter of about 6 mm without breaks. The holes should be bypassed from the inside.

14) Carefully, trying not to lubricate the sealant, install the cover in place.

15) Tighten the fastening bolts with a torque wrench (torque 41 N*m). Carefully wipe off excess sealant with a rag. Do not rush to pour oil right away, let the sealant dry.

With the rear gearbox everything is exactly the same. The only thing is that its lid turned out to be more rusty. Therefore, it was decided to sandblast it.

Cover with soil.

And paint it.

Now she is already in her place.

I will describe the process of pouring oil in words - bring the car suspension into working position (support it from below or put it on the wheels), pour oil through the filler hole to the level of the plug (until it starts to pour back out), replace the plug (lubricating it with a thin layer of sealant).
