The presence of fog lights (FFL) allows you to qualitatively improve road lighting in poor visibility conditions (rain, fog, high air humidity, etc.). Also correctly configured PTFs:

  • paired with a head light, they better illuminate the road in the immediate vicinity in front of the car;
  • fog lamps additionally illuminate the roadside, etc.

Taking into account such features, many motorists install PTF on cars in case of their absence. Moreover, owners often install xenon in their fog lights instead of halogen. At the same time, it is important to take into account a number of nuances when installing xenon in PTF. Read more in our article.

Features of PTF operation

Fog lights can be part of the head light or a separate element of car optics; they are located on the bumper or under the head light. The key requirement for such lighting devices: they must emit the same white or rich yellow wide beam of light over the road. The design feature is related to the requirement to ensure good visibility in difficult weather conditions: thick fog, precipitation, etc.

  • in rainy weather, the light from the PTF does not scatter, does not reflect or crystallize;
  • when it snows, the light does not reflect off the white canvas and does not crystallize;
  • in fog, the light beam lies between the road and the fog and provides good visibility of the road surface.

Terms of Use

The traffic rules indicate situations in which the driver can or must use the fog lights on. At night and on roads where lighting is not provided, PTFs can be turned on as an addition to the headlights. It is allowed to turn on this type of optics while parking, stopping or moving on public roads in cloudy and twilight times. During the day, fog lights can be used as running lights or low beams.

Hi all! Let me start by saying that I would not even advise my enemy to disassemble the headlights of the Lada Granta. This is such hell, to be honest, I didn’t expect this, even after reading all the reviews. There was so much sealant in my headlights that I went nuts. There was really a lot of it and a greasy layer. Who doesn’t care about everything, don’t warm up. I looked at the reviews, who heats who cuts.

At first I tried to heat the headlight and wanted to do it carefully, but alas, I didn’t succeed. So I started cutting the edge of the headlight using a utility knife. Sometimes the knife was heated to make it easier to cut.

When you have walked around the office, you should then make an incision. Then pull back the edge and trim the sealant using a utility knife. With this action we remove the edge and remove the sealant.

When we have removed the edge and cut off the sealant, we begin to cut the sealant between the headlight unit and the glass. This is the heaviest part, in my case there are kilograms of sealant.

After a long time of torment and already when the dictionary of the obscene-Russian language runs out, we still open the headlight.

I did these steps alone, but having a partner help you will be easier. Your partner will pull back the glass while you cut the sealant.

Next, we remove the headlight masks and start painting, our option: black headlight masks and reflector, white lens masks.

While the paint is drying, you can start wiring. Do the wiring for 5 minutes. We carry out everything carefully and as you please. Wiring kit for controlling lens shutters 300 rubles. We distribute the wiring to different headlights, connect them to the ignition blocks and ground, then we throw the main control unit for the lens shutters onto the battery.

We assemble the headlights and seal them; by the way, installing the lenses is easy and there are no difficulties. We put the headlights in place and hook them to the wiring. We feed angel eyes to the dimensions. There is a chip with 3 wires to the DRL lamps/dimensions. The wires are numbered on the chip. 1 - power supply for DRL 2 - ground (black wire) 3 - power supply for dimensions (in my case it is yellow)

By the way, the angel eyes come with a small block that produces constant voltage without falling.

When everything is ready, we install the headlights and check.

Everything works perfectly. Sighing proudly, we begin to collect everything and rejoice at the result.

Total: a lot of time wasted, namely the work took 24 hours. A lot of nerves were wasted, anger and bad news towards the headlights, at the end of the work there was joy and pride, a voice inside screams and rejoices: “Dude, you did it! And I did it myself,” but I can say that I will never disassemble Granta headlights again. Never. I'm satisfied with the result in principle. All that remains is to adjust the light, wash it and post photos))) The maintenance is just right, mileage is 44600. Thank you all for your attention, good luck on the roads))

Reasons for the ban on installing xenon

The light in fog lamps must be scattered in the desired direction, which is impossible to do with the light from gas-discharge lamps. If you put xenon in the PTF without lenses, the light will be scattered in all directions without being limited by shadow frames. It cannot be adjusted to create the upper dark edge and wide flat beam of light above the road necessary to improve visibility.

Therefore, if you install gas-discharge lamps without lenses, such light will blind the driver and oncoming traffic; if you install lenses, then there will be a narrow, precisely directed beam. Both options for installing xenon in PTF will be of no use, only problems.

We legalize “collective farm” xenon. Verified by ZR and Granta

We did the almost impossible - we re-equipped the editorial car and completed the conversion, as required by law. This means several months of work, frayed nerves - and money. So, our journey through the seven circles of hell.

In the summer, the State Traffic Inspectorate raided illegally converted cars. They caught everything - all-terrain vehicles with guards, passenger cars with “collective farm” xenon and wings, GAZelles with gas cylinders and isothermal booths. They wrote out protocols for 500–1000 rubles and obliged the owners to either bring the car to “factory” condition within ten days, or to register the alterations officially - otherwise they would deregister it.

Previously, only inspectors at technical control points could identify illegally converted vehicles. But Order No. 1240 of the Ministry of Internal Affairs gave such rights to ordinary traffic police officers, and they were allowed to conduct raids right on the roads. The inspectors admitted that this was a temporary hype, which was raised due to several scandals with lawless street racers. However, the tightening of nuts affected not so much road hooligans as harmless car owners - the same off-roaders and jeepers. They do not fly along the roads, stop at red lights, help pull cars out of ditches, and even participate in search operations of the Ministry of Emergency Situations. But formally the law is still violated by not filing the alterations in the proper manner.

The search is over, but the problems remain. Motorists do not register for alterations, because the registration procedure is the seven circles of hell. We took the risk of going through them ourselves, having previously introduced home-made xenon into the headlights of the editorial Granta.

To ensure proper light distribution, in addition to bi-xenon lamps and ballast ignition units, we decided to implant lenses into the standard headlights. Pressure washers are required by law. Previously, in accordance with GOST R 51709–2001, it was mandatory to have an automatic headlight leveler so as not to blind oncoming traffic, but now it is installed at will. We want to do everything in a humane way and therefore we consider autocorrector necessary in Grant.

In theory

The order of registration is as follows. First, you go to a specialized expert organization (the list is on the official website of the Eurasian Economic Commission, on the page of the technical regulation department) and receive an opinion on whether such a modification is allowed in principle. Then you contact the traffic police department where technical supervision works (there are such in every major city), write a corresponding application and attach a preliminary expert opinion. Inspectors inspect the car and make their decision - whether it is allowed or not.

How to install xenon in fog lights?

The legislation does not provide separate rules for different types of car lights, so the same rules apply for fog lights as for head lights. But standard optics may include xenon or bi-xenon headlights; if not, then they can be legalized. Automakers do not provide standard xenon fog lights. Is it possible to install xenon in fog lights?

To do this you need:

  • buy certified equipment;
  • install it at a qualified service station;
  • and receive positive conclusions from the testing laboratory and the traffic police at the preliminary stage and after installation.

If you go through the procedure, there will be no problems with the inspection, but with PTF such a scenario is impossible for one reason: neither the testing laboratory nor the traffic police will approve such an update to the vehicle, since it blinds oncoming traffic and does not fulfill its task. Do you think you will find what kind of xenon can be installed in foglights? Don't think, it's impossible. This is not enshrined in theory and legislation, but in practice, a car with gas-discharge lamps in PTF will not pass inspection and will not receive permission for installation.

What you need to know about the operating regulations for xenon headlights

Everything is a little confusing here, let's figure it out together. Installing xenon in headlights not intended for it negatively affects their operation. Although the Road Traffic Safety Inspectorate’s argument is not particularly deep and is given in general terms that the installation of xenon affects the incorrect operation of the lenses and other elements of the headlight, you are unlikely to be able to prove the opposite.

Although, of course, if you delve into the topic and study the regulations of the Customs Union regarding vehicle safety, it is difficult to find any restrictions on the operating mode, other than the fact that it must be constant or flickering for different types of lighting devices. That is, the turn signals and emergency lights can flash, the low and high beams must be stable, and, perhaps, this is where the restrictions end.

Xenon, according to this description of the standards, it turns out, is not prohibited, regardless of its color or mode of operation of the headlights. Remember this and give reasons when meeting with traffic police officers. However, as practice shows, it is possible to defend your rights only if there is a discrepancy in the perception of xenon color, but this is unlikely to be possible with the operating mode. And then, if your headlights don't glow, it's obviously blue.

Fine, deprivation of rights or cancellation of registration?

Deprivation of a driver's license for six months to a year applies to the violator simultaneously 2 conditions: color and mode of operation. Theoretically, if the xenon in the fog lights shines white or yellow and does not blink, then deprivation of rights should not be applied, most likely a fine of 500 rubles. The store consultant is unlikely to tell you. For example, the geometric parameters of the 3G generation are larger than those of 1G. At the same time, sometimes installation will be impossible, even despite the readiness for fine-tuning. But if the size and cost suit you, then the 3G generation is preferable, since its light characteristics are still better.
