Replacing the contact group of the ignition switch of a VAZ 2110 on your own

Many car enthusiasts quite often encounter a number of malfunctions in their car. One of the problematic faults is the breakdown of the ignition switch. If we start talking about this problem, we should immediately focus on the fact that it is very serious. At the most inopportune moment, the ignition switch may refuse to work, so you must understand how serious this is. If you are the owner of a VAZ 2110, then you probably know that this problem cannot be avoided in such a car. You need to understand as best as possible how the ignition switch of a VAZ 2110 is replaced and that this does not require special skills at all.

Replacing the ignition switch in a VAZ 2110

Starter malfunctions and reasons for their occurrence

The unit does not spin the flywheel due to many factors. Below we will discuss defects in the immobilizer, pull-out relay, injector, as well as in the car wiring. Sometimes repairs are not enough, in which case the device needs to be replaced.

Faulty injector

The standard version of the VAZ 2110 is not equipped with injectors, but they can be supplied separately. Drivers choose these devices for many reasons: reduced fuel consumption, no need to warm up the engine in cold weather, increased power characteristics.

The arrow points to the starter relay

If the starter is not working well, then you need to check the injector, which may be acting up due to bad gasoline. This is the only drawback of the injector - it requires high-quality fuel. It is also worth checking whether the connection diagram is followed.

Overrunning clutch failure

If the overrunning clutch breaks, the engine starts and runs perfectly. But when the car stops, the engine cannot be restarted; it clicks but does not start. In this case, you need to wait until the power plant has cooled down, and only then try to start it.

Also in this case, it is worth inspecting the wiring that comes from the coupling. Sometimes replacing damaged wires can solve a problem where the engine clicks but won't start. Another sign of a faulty clutch is the radio turning on spontaneously.

Solenoid relay

Once behind the wheel, the driver inserts the key and turns it, the fuel pump starts working, the dashboard lights up, but when turning further, the pump and the panel turn off, and the starter does not turn. In such a situation, the solenoid relay is most likely to blame.

Removing the solenoid relay

First of all, you need to check whether there is voltage going to it. If it does, then it’s worth checking the lock itself or the alarm system, which may close the circuit. If all the elements work separately and do not start together, then the starter does not turn due to the solenoid relay.

Poor contact

In this case, the starter starts after several attempts, but it still clicks. This problem occurs due to damaged contacts. The inspection should begin with the battery. If the terminals are oxidized, you need to clean them.

If this does not help, then you should check the starter contacts, because when they are oxidized, the device turns poorly or does not start the crankshaft at all. If the starter refuses to work, but the immobilizer is running, then there is a malfunction in it. Here you won’t be able to remove the defect yourself - you need to go to a car service center. Now readers know how much it costs and why the starter does not work; it is worth doing the work yourself only if you have experience working with wiring.

Installation of a new larva

Ignition switch daewoo nexia and matiz: replacing the assembly, contact group and cylinder
To change the lock core due to mechanical failure, remove it from the car as described above. Then follow this algorithm:

  1. Insert the key into the slot and use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the 3 screws holding the 2 halves of the lock body together.
  2. Separate the housing while holding it with the key facing up. If you hold the lock in a different position during disassembly and do not insert the key, the insides will spill out and you will not understand how to put them back together. In this case, the ball with springs may get lost.
  3. Remove the locking mechanism, which consists of two spring-loaded parts, and pull out the spring itself.
  4. After removing the key, carefully remove the core so that the ball with the spring (located on the side of the cylinder) is not lost.

To disassemble the case, you need to unscrew 3 screws

Before replacing, it is necessary to remove the return spring from the old cylinder, since it is not sold complete with a new core. The spring is inside the part on the back side in a cocked state; it must be installed in the same form on the new cylinder. Also, do not forget to remove the thin spring from the hole where the ball is inserted.

The locking mechanism tongue peeks out from the bottom of the case

The larva must be pulled out so as not to lose the details

When installing the core, you need to move the spring for the ball into the hole and insert the part into the body. Then push the larva all the way, while simultaneously inserting the ball into the socket. After that, all that remains is to assemble the locking mechanism and tighten the housing with screws. When finished, check the operation of the ignition switch by turning the key to different positions.

The ejection spring from the old core needs to be moved to the new one

Instructions for removing the element

Replacing the ignition switch for VAZ 2110, 2111, 2112

For disassembly you need to prepare a simple set of tools:

  • 10 mm head and ratchet drive;
  • Phillips screwdriver;
  • narrow chisel (width 5-8 mm);
  • hammer;
  • round nose pliers with tapered, curved ends.

Ignition switch replacement tool

To successfully install a new or repaired lock in place, it is advisable to purchase 4 special fastening bolts with M6 threads with a head size of 10 mm and a length of 20 mm. Their feature is the heads that come off with a key at a certain tightening torque. After tearing off the heads, semicircular caps remain on the surface, which are much more difficult to unscrew for an untrained person. But you will have to do this during disassembly.

The battery must be disconnected before starting work.

Like any event related to tampering with the electrical part of the car, dismantling the ignition switch begins with disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery. Then proceed in this order:

  1. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws holding the two halves of the plastic frame of the steering column together.
  2. Lower the handle that fixes the position of the steering wheel during adjustment all the way down and remove the plastic panels. Disconnect the ignition switch block and carefully cut the tape connecting your bundle of wires to the common harness. In order not to cling to the steering column switch during operation, it can also be pulled out of the connector.
  3. On the metal casing of the steering column you will see a lock mount consisting of two clamps. They are held together by 4 bolts with the heads torn off (visible on the left side). Pointing the chisel at the semicircular caps, use a hammer to loosen the tightening of these bolts one by one.
  4. Using pliers and then your hands, unscrew all 4 bolts and remove the ignition switch.

Unscrewing the plastic steering column cover

Bolts with intact heads can be unscrewed with a wrench

At the stage of disconnecting the connectors, it becomes possible to check the functionality of the contact group by measuring resistance, as described in the previous section. If you remove the lock due to the loss of the keys and want to move on, then after dismantling you need to do the following:

  1. On the “mother” block, which remains hanging after the lock is turned off, find contacts with thick wires of purple and blue color (the latter with a black stripe).
  2. Connect these terminals with any conductor, after which the ignition will turn on.
  3. The thick red wire leads to the starter. To start, its contact must be temporarily connected to the installed jumper. When the engine starts, the red wire must be disconnected.

This is how jumpers are inserted into the block to start the engine without a key.

After unscrewing the fasteners and disconnecting the wires, the lock can be easily removed from the car

Assembly is carried out in the reverse order, but taking into account the following precautions:

  • do not tighten the fastening bolts until you have accurately aligned the position of the lock on the casing so that the facing plastic panel fits smoothly into place;
  • before final tightening the bolts, make sure that the lock snaps into place when turning the steering wheel, otherwise adjust the position of the lock;
  • The tightening torque should be such that the heads of the new bolts come off and the round heads remain.

When installing and tightening the bolts, their heads should come off

If you think that special fasteners are not an obstacle for car thieves, then you can screw in regular bolts with M6 threads and carefully tighten them.

Dismantling

VAZ-2109 ignition switch diagram (carburetor, injector)

If previous activities have shown that intervention in the design of the ignition switch is required, work in any case will begin with dismantling the device.

We have special step-by-step instructions for this.

  1. To begin, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery of your VAZ 2110. This way you will ensure your safety and the safety of all wiring. You know what the consequences of a short circuit are.
  2. Next, remove the casing on the steering column. This is how you gain access to the castle.
  3. If you feel that the rotary switches will interfere with your work, it is better to remove them immediately. The work does not last for a couple of minutes, so all irritants should be put aside.
  4. Armed with a chisel and hammer, unscrew the mounting bolts with round heads. Don't get confused, they are the only ones there. Try to perform this operation as carefully as possible so as not to knock off the bolt head.
  5. Now take the pliers and remove the bolts.
  6. Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to position zero. This will disable the anti-theft system.
  7. Next in line is the bracket that held the previously removed bolts and the ignition switch itself.
  8. Mark the contact wires using different colored markers. Otherwise, you can easily mix them up during reassembly.
  9. Often it is not necessary to completely replace the lock, but only partial repairs. For example, change the backlight bulb, or fix a microswitch problem.
  10. Disconnect the connectors that used to operate the ignition switch.
  11. To replace the backlight bulb, disconnect the corresponding connectors, and then use pliers to remove the bulb.
  12. To replace the contacts, use a screwdriver to press out the special latches.
  13. Using a shaped screwdriver, unscrew three screws, after which you can remove the rod.
  14. Use a regular flathead screwdriver to pry out the clips and remove the microswitch.
  15. Next, new ones are inserted in place of the dismantled elements.

Checking status

Installation

Now that all preliminary repair work has been carried out, there are two options:

  • Install a completely new ignition switch with wires and contacts, since the old one is unsuitable for further use;
  • Return the old lock to its place, since the repairs have borne fruit.

Before installation, be sure to purchase special bolts equipped with break-away heads. They are designed to prevent your vehicle from being stolen.

Regardless of the option, the lock installation sequence is identical.

  • Insert the key into the ignition, then turn it to position one.
  • Secure the bracket to the steering column, and then replace the mounting bolts.
  • Remove the key from the lock and check that the shaft lock works properly. If it's a new lock, there shouldn't be any problems. If we are talking about a refurbished old one, troubles may arise, since in reality it is better not to skimp and immediately replace the spare parts with a device of good quality.
  • If everything works as it should, then you can complete the installation of the lock by tightening special bolts that are equipped with tear-off heads.

Buy only high-quality locks from trusted suppliers. Today there is an impressive number of fakes on the market, which use materials and components of dubious quality. Because of them, you can be seriously injured and even lose your car.

At the moment, the cost of a new ignition switch is about 20-25 dollars. These are small expenses, but sometimes simply necessary. Whether to do the repairs yourself or trust the car to a service station is a personal choice for everyone.

Reasons for replacement

Wiring diagram of the ignition switch VAZ 2108. ignition switch block VAZ 2109

It is necessary to replace the entire lock or just the contact group, depending on the nature of the breakdown and the situation with your car. Therefore, we will consider options when replacement may still be required.

Reason for replacement Your actions
There was an attempted theft, as a result of which the integrity of the lock was compromised In this case, only the contact group and the cylinder can be replaced, since the lock itself is most likely intact. Lower costs and required repair efficiency. Although experts advise purchasing a new lock right away and installing it
The keys were lost and there was no spare There is no point in trying to find a master who will turn you exactly the same key as before. You will have to purchase a lock and install it on your car
Problems with contacts or contact group It is not difficult to check whether this is really the problem. Turn off the battery by disconnecting the negative terminal, then remove the cover under the steering column and check the wires for resistance. Switch the key alternately to positions 1,2 and 3, while measuring the resistance. If the ohmmeter shows “zero”, then the lock really has a problem and needs to be replaced.
There was a desire to improve the castle Often, car owners replace the standard ignition with a more modern one, equipped with lighting. It is not expensive, but it is convenient to use in the dark. No need to fumble for the key slot

When checking the contact group, be sure to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery, otherwise a short circuit will occur, and not only the contactor will have to be replaced.

Pinout in photo

Circuit and pinout

First of all, get acquainted with the lock diagram and wire connection diagram, which will allow you to better understand the features of the 3Z pinout.

As you can see, the pinout includes 8 elements. What does each of them mean and what functions are they responsible for? We'll figure out.

  1. Power supply for the inserted key sensor microswitch (+12Volt).
  2. Power supply to ground when doors are opened on the driver's side.
  3. Power supply that supplies current to the starter (+12Volt, pin 50 on the diagram).
  4. Source at +12Volt. Activated after turning on the ignition. Power supply for additional equipment, such as video recorders, clocks, etc. (pin 15 in the diagram).
  5. Source at +12 Volts. Triggers when the key is inserted. Goes to pin 5.
  6. Power supply +12Volt. The illumination of the 3Z larva is activated.
  7. +12V source from the battery (pin 30 in the diagram).
  8. Not active.

Wiring

Replacing the ignition switch of a VAZ 2110

Replacing the lock with a new one is only necessary if it has already stopped working altogether or if a fairly serious breakdown has occurred; in all other cases, you can get by by replacing the failed parts.

The most common reasons for replacement:

  • if the car has been stolen;
  • if the key is lost;
  • breakdown of the contact group.

Instructions for replacing the ignition switch:

  1. To carry out this procedure, you need to use special bolts with tear-off heads; some motorists recommend replacing them with twenty-millimeter M6 bolts, which can be removed more quickly during repeated repairs;
  2. To loosen the bolts you will need a chisel; during use you need to be extremely careful not to break the bolt head;
  3. Immediately before replacing the ignition switch, you need to insert the key into it and turn it to position “I” so that the latch, which blocks the steering shaft mechanism, is in the lock body.
  4. Then you can put the ignition switch on the steering column and secure it with a bracket, also tighten it with bolts for fastening.
  5. After removing the key from the keyhole, you need to check whether the steering shaft locking mechanism works. If the shaft lock does not work, you will need to adjust the position of the ignition switch on the steering column until the latch fits into the groove on the steering shaft.
  6. When the locking mechanism is working normally, then using a spanner wrench “10” you finally need to tighten the fastening bolts.

Ultimately, I would like to note that repairing the ignition switch of a VAZ 2110 is not very difficult to perform; you just need to try, and everyone will be able to follow a simple algorithm of actions in order to cope with the task.

Despite the apparent simplicity of such a unit as a car ignition switch, if it does not work, it will be quite difficult to start the car. And at the same time, repairing or replacing this mechanism on the “tenth” VAZ family will not be difficult even for a novice driver.

The car cannot be started due to a broken ignition switch.

How to remove the ignition switch:

  1. First you need to disconnect the negative battery by using the ground disconnect button or resetting the corresponding battery terminal.
  2. Before removing the protective plastic in the passenger compartment, you need to lower the lever of the steering column adjustment mechanism. It is located under the steering wheel.
  3. Next, use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the steering column trim screws.
  4. After unscrewing the screws, carefully remove the decorative casing.
  5. Once you have access to the wiring, disconnect the ignition switch connector.
  6. The lock is attached to the steering shaft using a steel clamp. On the left side you will see four bolts with their heads stripped off. This was done on purpose to make it more difficult for hijackers.
  7. It is impossible to unscrew the bolts with a wrench, so a hammer and chisel are used for this purpose. After applying targeted blows with a chisel to the heads in a counterclockwise direction, the bolts should give way. In the future, it is convenient to unscrew them with curly pliers.
  8. Once the bolts have been removed, the ignition switch can be completely removed for inspection, repair, or replacement.

Purpose of the lock

The lock is a breaker that opens and closes the contacts necessary to start and operate the motor. It was originally intended to protect the car from theft. Now, when car thieves are able to break into even the most complex electronic locks and new generation anti-theft systems, it has lost its significance as an anti-theft agent. The breakdown of this device creates a lot of trouble for drivers, and some even replace it with a “start” button. Let's look at how to diagnose the ignition switch of a VAZ 2110, repair or replacement, decide for yourself.

Replacing the ignition switch on a VAZ-2112

Replacing the entire assembly will take at most an hour and a half, and the price of a new ignition switch on a VAZ-2112 is within 1,000 rubles.

Sometimes you can save money and change only the contact group. Then replacing it yourself and purchasing a separate contact group will cost three hundred rubles at most.

Removal

We can talk about the reasons for the lock breakdown and possible malfunctions for a long time, but if the task is to remove the lock, then this can be done in half an hour if you follow a fairly simple algorithm of actions, but first you should listen to simple advice:

Any work with electricity requires disconnecting the battery. The first safety rule is to remove the negative terminal from the battery or turn off the ground switch, if there is one.

Only after this can you start working. And yet, it wouldn’t hurt to organize decent lighting. Working in the area of the steering column is always associated with cramped conditions and lack of light. By spending a few minutes organizing good lighting, we will save a lot of time and nerves during work.

In addition to the standard set of keys and screwdrivers, a hammer and chisel will be useful. It’s better to find two hammers to compensate for the impact force, but for now we remove the lock in this order:

  1. To access the ignition switch, it will be necessary to remove the decorative plastic casing, and it is more convenient to do this with the steering column lowered all the way. The adjustment mechanism lever is located directly under the steering wheel.
  2. Now you can remove the casing, and for this you need a Phillips screwdriver. We unscrew all the screws and carefully remove the plastic casing.
  3. After removing the casing, access to the wiring becomes available. First of all, you need to disconnect the contact block of the ignition switch contact group.
  4. To protect against theft, the lock body itself is attached to the steering shaft with a steel clamp. During installation, as a rule, the bolts break off, so it is impossible to unscrew them humanly. This is why we need a hammer and chisel. The lock is fastened not with bolts, but with studs. Most likely this was done for anti-theft purposes. And, if your new lock is equipped with bolts, then do not be alarmed, modern car thieves simply turn the cylinder.
  5. Now you will have to hit the bolt heads with a sharp chisel, and you need to strike in a counterclockwise direction. It is better if at this moment an assistant supports the second hammer on the opposite side of the steering shaft. In this way, it will be possible to avoid unnecessary vibrations and unnecessary unnecessary load on the steering column.
  6. After several blows with a chisel, the bolts should give way and begin to unscrew. Now they can be picked up with pliers, round nose pliers or a similar tool.
  7. Once the bolts are removed, the ignition switch assembly can be removed from the steering column for repair, diagnosis, or complete replacement.

Installing a new ignition switch

Regardless of whether we install a new lock or a repaired old one, we will have to buy four tricky bolts with heads that break off.

Of course, you can install simple bolts, but this way we will make life much easier for the thief if he sets his sights on our car. If we install the correct disposable bolts, then it will not be possible to unscrew the lock just like that, remember how much noise we made while knocking out the bolts.

Otherwise, the process of installing a new ignition switch on VAZ cars of the tenth family is quite simple:

  1. We install the lock body with the contact group assembly on the steering shaft and press it with a bar. We tighten the bolts.
  2. Use a spanner wrench or a socket wrench to tighten the bolts until they stop.
  3. Before breaking off the heads, it is necessary to adjust the position of the steering wheel so that the steering shaft is fixed in the position of the key in the lock against the “I” mark. If this does not happen, the steering wheel rotates freely and the shaft is not blocked, it is necessary to set the lock so that the latch fits into the groove on the shaft.
  4. After final fastening to the shaft, the heads should break off. At the very least, this is what needs to be achieved from them.
  5. Once again we check the functionality of the locking mechanism, connect the terminal block, connect the negative terminal of the battery and check the functionality of the ignition switch assembly. If everything is in order, you can install the decorative casing.

Replacing the lock cylinder

Sometimes troubles arise when the key turns poorly or is poorly inserted into the lock. The problem is solved by replacing the cylinder, the price of which is less than the full cost of the complete lock; for this you will need:

  • Hammer
  • Pliers
  • Chisel
  • Thin drill bit and drill
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Thin screwdriver
  • New larva with keys

Let's start replacing

Our instructions will help you replace the lock cylinder without any problems:

  • We carry out all the steps, as in the previous article, de-energize the electrical system of the machine, remove the covers from the column
  • You can start replacing the lock cylinder now without removing the lock itself
  • To do this, you just need to pull out the side pin that holds it in the lock.
  • For this we need a clock screwdriver, we knock out the pin by tapping it with a hammer
  • When the pin cannot be removed so easily, you can drill out the cylinder using a drill and a thin drill bit
  • To remove the lock before proceeding to replace the cylinder, then first unscrew the bolts that secure the ignition switch
  • Their heads are cut off, so use a hammer and chisel, then pliers
  • Then the bracket and the ignition switch itself are removed from the steering column, do not forget to disconnect the electrical connector
  • We unscrew the screw securing the relay, pull it out from under the panel, then disconnect the connector
  • Disconnect the ground wires from the relay
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the screw and press out the latch
  • Now remove the cover and group of contacts
  • Removing the lock
  • We take out the larva as described above
  • We make a replacement
  • Before putting the ignition switch in place, you need to insert the key into it and turn it to position “I” so that the latch, which will block the steering shaft mechanism, is hidden in the lock body
  • We install the ignition switch on the steering column together with the fastening bracket and tighten the new bolts that have breakaway heads with the “10” key. We remove the key and check the operation of the steering shaft locking mechanism
  • If the shaft does not lock, then it is necessary to adjust the location of the ignition switch relative to the steering column so that the lock latch fits exactly into the groove of the steering shaft
  • Then tighten the breakaway bolts until the breakaway heads break off.

Replacing the ignition switch on a VAZ-2110, 2111, 2112

  • If the key is lost or the lock fails, the engine cannot be started.
  • In addition, the lock also blocks the steering column, and if your car breaks down far from a service center or a car store, and you have no one to ask for help, the car can only be taken away by a tow truck.
  • But if you have the opportunity to buy a lock and have a minimum number of tools, you can replace it yourself.

Malfunctions of the ignition switch VAZ 2110

Malfunctions of the ignition switch of the VAZ 2110 and its family are as follows:

  • Mechanical destruction - failure of the lock cylinder, steering column locking mechanism, deformation of the key, jamming of the lock in the on position (the engine is running, the car does not stall when you turn the key);
  • Electrical circuit failure is excessive wear of the lock contacts and, as a consequence, failure of its electrical part.

Replacing the ignition switch on a VAZ 2110 car

All cars of the VAZ 2110 family have the same ignition switch. It changes in the same way. To remove and install it you will need the following tool:

  • crosshead screwdriver;
  • pliers;
  • thin, sharp chisel;
  • hammer;
  • key to 10.

The procedure for removing the lock is as follows:

Remove the plastic steering column casings by first unscrewing their fastening screws (they are located below, on the side of the lower casing);

Remove the left steering column switch (turn indicators);

Disconnect the ignition switch connector;

Using a chisel and hammer, unscrew the bolts holding the lock on the steering column; to do this, it is necessary to place the sharp edge of the chisel on the head of the bolt at such an angle that when it is hit with a hammer, it turns the bolt counterclockwise;

After breaking the tightening, completely unscrew the bolts with your fingers or pliers.

So, you have the old lock in your hands, you can install a new one.

Installation is carried out in the reverse order, but with one feature: the new bolts are supplied complete with a lock with tear-off caps, this is a kind of alternative to a torque wrench.

The manufacturer recommends tightening the new bolt until its head comes off. This tightening is considered quite strong.

Replacing door and trunk cylinders

To replace the door cylinder, you must remove the interior door panel. It is held on by two screws and pistons located around its perimeter.

Procedure for removing the casing:

Unscrew the “soldier” of the lock from the interior.

Remove the decorative trim of the door open/close handle block from the inside.

Unscrew the screws hidden under it. After releasing the handle, remove it from the rod.

  1. Unscrew the screws of the decorative speaker trim and remove it.
  2. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the lock of the window lifter handle and remove it.
  3. Use a special plastic mounting spatula, or something similar, to carefully remove the panel pistons from the door.

It is recommended to pre-purchase several pistons, because... they often break.

Replacing lock cylinders

  • Once the panel is removed, you can begin replacing the door lock cylinder.
  • It is necessary to disconnect the rod going from the cylinder to the lock by prying it with a screwdriver from the drive side of the cylinder.
  • Next, use pliers or a screwdriver to pry the cylinder lock and remove it from the door, then insert a new cylinder and assemble everything in the reverse order.
  • All that remains is to pull out the larva.
  • Replacing the trunk lock cylinder is somewhat simpler.
  • To do this, remove the trunk lid trim, after which full access to the entire lock mechanism opens.
  • We unscrew the bolt securing the button with the cylinder to the trunk lid, and remove the mechanism assembly, disconnecting it from the rod going to the lock itself, and replace it with a new one.
  • We install and assemble the trunk lid in the reverse order.

The result of the work done

From all of the above, we can conclude that all these operations are quite simple and, with a minimum amount of tools, anyone who knows how to use a screwdriver and wrenches can do this. And if you do everything yourself, you can save time and money on a trip to the service center.

Removing the lock

After we have checked the condition of the lock using the electrical diagram, it is time to remove the ignition switch from the VAZ 2110; it is more convenient to carry out repairs with the lock removed:

  • And so we have already removed the terminals from the battery, as well as the plastic covers from the steering column (to do this, unscrew the fastening screws from below)
  • Disconnect under the steering switches (to do this, simply unclip the latches) and take a simple tool - a hammer, chisel and pliers
  • For greater safety, the bolts securing the ignition switch have sheared heads.
  • Therefore, you will have to unscrew them using a chisel and hammer

Unscrew the lock bolts using a chisel and hammer

  • Now you can unscrew the bolts with pliers
  • Remove the bracket from the column
  • Remove the ignition switch

Changing the contact group

If during the test it turns out that the contact group is faulty, then the sequence of actions will be as follows.

  1. The ignition switch is removed as described above.
  2. The plug is removed from it, the wires of which go to the backlight lamps.
  3. Using a screwdriver, the plastic latches holding the ignition switch cover are bent (there are 4 of them), after which the cover is removed.
  4. For full access to the group, a couple more latches are bent.
  5. The contact group is retrieved.
  6. Contacts are checked for oxidation or burnout. If oxidation occurs, the oxide film is removed from the contacts using sandpaper. If there is complete or partial burnout of contacts, then the entire group is replaced.
  7. After this, the ignition switch is reassembled.

As you can see from this article, replacing the ignition switch is not difficult. The main thing to remember is that the most vulnerable point of this unit is not the contacts at all, but the plastic latches on the lock cover. When bending them, under no circumstances should you use much force, as they are very fragile. If the latches are broken, you will have to buy a new ignition switch, since the covers for such locks are very rarely sold separately.

Ignition switch malfunctions

The ignition switch on a VAZ 2110 must be replaced if its operation cannot be restored in any way or the key is broken/lost. In other cases, they are usually repaired.

There are two groups of main breakdowns:

  1. The mechanics are faulty. The most common problem is the breakage of the larva. The keys are made of soft metal, so they are unreliable and can often simply break off. There is also a problem with the steering wheel locking or the key may simply get stuck when in the on position.
  2. Wear of the contact group. No matter what kind of damage you have, you will still have to dismantle the lock. If the tongue of the blocker is jammed, you will have to work hard to correct the situation. The contact group or larva is quite easy to repair.

The main reason for the breakdown of the contact group (burnout) is overloading the vehicle’s electrical equipment.

In order to check the ignition switch on a VAZ 2110, there are many instructions and methods, we will consider some of them.

Detailed instructions for checking faults in the ignition switch:

  1. The first thing to do is disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.
  2. Remove the plastic cover of the steering column to get to the contacts of the pads, because it is with their help that power is connected to the car's electrical wiring. Next, disconnect the connector of the harness itself from the on-board network and pull it out.
  3. Next, you need to use an ohmmeter to check the resistance on the contacts themselves, while setting the key in position 1, 2 or 3. When the contacts are working, the resistance on them will be zero, but if it is infinity, then the lock is broken. If they burn slightly, the device will show slight resistance.
  4. In order to check the serviceability of the backlight, you need to apply a direct current with a voltage of 12V to contacts 2 and 6 of the wiring harness block. In this case, if the lamp lights up, everything is fine with it, but if not, there is a break in the electrical circuit or it simply burned out.
  5. If you see that contacts 15, 30 and 50 in the ignition switch are faulty, then you need to replace the entire contact group.

Diagnostic measures

Checking the condition of electrical components and mechanisms can be effective only after disassembling the decor that hides the insides. Plastic elements are located around the steering column, capturing parts and components partially located on it.

After opening access to the electrical part, you will need an ohmmeter to test the operation of the unit and the absence of failures when supplying current from the battery. Checks are carried out in different key positions. This is due to the fact that for each position certain contact closures are provided.

It is important to know that the resistance at the contacts of a working system must be zero.

The driver can start the car independently even if the lock is faulty. A similar situation happens on the road, when it is still far from the garage or the nearest car service station. The launch method is described in the presented video.

  • The starter is not started after the driver's command. After turning the key in the well, there are no characteristic clicks arising from the activation of the retractor/control relay. This is evidence of a lack of voltage supply to the node.
  • Some electrical appliances do not start. When the key position is fixed, electrical appliances should start. The consumers for each position are not functionally linked, but must be enabled.
  • Starting occurs after a slight movement of the key. The lock core or contact group is poorly fixed, which affects the quality of the connection. At a certain position, it is possible to achieve contact between the elements of the electrical circuit.

Some symptoms can be “cured” by replacing the cylinder, because the dismountable ignition switch device of the VAZ-2110 allows this . Dismantling is carried out based on structural features.

Replacing the contact group of the ignition switch of a VAZ 2110

But all electrical faults should be looked for in the contact group. Moreover, it is not at all necessary to change the entire lock completely. There can be many problems, since almost all consumers are connected to the contact group of the lock, and if you do not use the diagram provided, you can easily get confused. To check the functionality of the contact group, you will have to ring each contact using a multimeter. Loaded contacts can sometimes burn out; in this case, it will be enough to simply clean them with a diamond file. You can check the contact group in a simpler way by removing the ground from the battery and dismantling the lower steering column casing. If you disconnect the connector from the ignition switch and check each contact with an ohmmeter, then a serviceable contact group will not short out any of them.
